Disclaimer
Ammonites does not guarantee successful identification. There are a lot of ammonite genera (over 3,000),
way too many to all be documented by Ammonites.
Failed Identification
● If you failed to find your ammonite, its genus may not yet be documented by Ammonites.
● You also may have found a new genus - it's possible, but I wouldn't bet on it.
● There may also be an error in the database.
Notes
● Some ammonites were sexually dimorphic, with a macroconch (female) and microconch (male).
● Some ammonite genera have species that look different, such as
Kosmoceras (not all specimens have the
lappets). In addition, the hooked protoconch of
Didymoceras differs in size, shape, and
direction in different species.
● Some genera like Hungarites and Biferoceras are not yet in the database.
